What makes a porta potty wheelchair-accessible?

A wheelchair-accessible porta potty has a floor at ground level with no step, a door wide enough for a wheelchair, grab bars beside the seat, and enough inside space for a 60-inch turning circle. Our accessible units measure about 7 by 7 feet outside. They weigh about twice as much as a standard unit.

  • Floor: ground-level entry with a low threshold, no step.
  • Door: wide, with a self-closing hinge and an easy latch.
  • Inside: room for a 60-inch diameter turning circle. That is a full circle, not a radius.
  • Grab bars: mounted beside the seat.
  • Tank: about the same capacity as a standard unit.

How many accessible units does an event need?

An event needs at least one wheelchair-accessible unit in every cluster of portable toilets. Under the 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2, at least 5 percent of the units in each cluster must be accessible, with a minimum of one. A cluster of 20 units needs 1 accessible unit; a cluster of 21 needs 2.

Read the rule at the U.S. Access Board. The standard sets a legal minimum; your venue or permit office may ask for more. This page is not legal advice.

Placement matters as much as the unit. Set accessible units on a firm, level route from parking and seating. A ramp up a curb or a soft lawn defeats the purpose. Ask us to place them at the end of the row closest to the path.

Accessible porta potty questions

Does an ADA porta potty cost more than a standard one?

A wheelchair-accessible unit costs about $50 to $60 more than a standard unit for an event package. On a 28-day job-site rental, the difference is about the same per cycle. The unit is larger and heavier, and fewer fit on a truck.

Do I need an accessible unit for a private backyard party?

Private backyard parties have no legal requirement for an accessible unit. Many families still rent one when a guest uses a wheelchair, walker or cane. The ground-level floor and grab bars help older guests and anyone recovering from surgery.

Can an accessible unit go on grass?

An accessible unit can sit on firm, level grass, but a wheelchair rolls poorly on soft turf. A driveway, patio or packed gravel works better. Lay plywood or a mat for the last few feet if the only spot is lawn.

Is there a sink inside the accessible unit?

Our accessible units come with hand sanitizer inside. For a sink, pair the unit with a hand-washing station that has a basin at reachable height, set on the same level surface.

Can I rent an accessible unit for home use after surgery?

Homeowners rent accessible units after hip or knee surgery, or while an upstairs bathroom is unreachable. Weekly cleaning is included on 28-day rentals. We set the unit on the driveway or a patio close to the door.
