OSHA's field sanitation rule, 29 CFR 1928.110, applies when 11 or more employees do hand labor in the field on a given day. The employer must provide 1 toilet and 1 hand-washing facility for every 20 workers. Both must be within a quarter-mile walk of the crew, or at the closest vehicle access point.
Read the rule at OSHA 1928.110. Small family operations below 11 hand-laborers are not covered, but a unit still saves long trips back to the yard. See also the full OSHA guide.
When do Nebraska farms rent porta potties?
Nebraska farms rent porta potties most often during the July detasseling season, the September-to-November harvest, spring planting and pivot installation, and grain-bin construction. Livestock operations and seed plants keep units all year. Harvest units fill up early, so reserve them by August.
Need hand washing for a crew that eats in the field? Add a hand-washing station. For grain-bin and shop builds, see job-site rentals.

Farm rental questions
Can you move the unit from field to field during harvest?
We move units between fields on our regular route days during harvest. Call the day before with the field location or a pin drop. Many farms rent one unit per crew and move it as the combines move.
Do detasseling crews need porta potties?
Detasseling crews of 11 or more hand-laborers fall under OSHA's field sanitation rule, 29 CFR 1928.110. That means 1 toilet and 1 hand-washing facility for every 20 workers, within a quarter-mile walk. Crews usually work in July, so book units in May or June.
Can your truck get down a field road?
Our trucks handle dry gravel and dry field roads. After heavy rain, a loaded truck cannot cross a soft field. We set the unit at the field entrance on firm ground instead. Tell us about low wires, narrow culverts and cattle guards when you book.
Do you service units at livestock sites?
Livestock sites and feedlots get weekly service like any job site. Place the unit upwind of pens and outside any area the animals can reach, on a firm pad the service truck can back up to.
